Or he can only be killed after the amulet is removed. That way it's not like he dies immediately when the amulet is lost, plus he has a chance to recover it.

Okay hows this:
The amulet is where his heart should be, that means that to get it out you need to A) punch through his armour and B) tear his ribcage open. The amulet also provides a magical blue blood supply which is the real thing keeping him alive, as long as there is still blood in his non-existent veins he remains up and about. That way he has time to get the amulet back.
Good? Bad?
