How mundane is mundane?
A collection of random musings on weapons:
So, real items don't have to list weaknesses when listed in a character's app...
But what about realistic fake weapons. Sure, one can bypass this by using generic terms like assault Rifle or Sniper Rifle or using aforementioned real weapons...but where is the fun in that?
Demonstration:
Within SHRP canon is a company called "Legion Arms." They develop 3 unique cartridges: 10mm Pistol; 5.6mm Rifle(Mid power); and 8mm Rifle(High power).
Similarly, Legion developes 3 new weapons: LA Model 24 Pistol (10mm), LA Model 38 Assault Rifle (5.6mm), and LA Model 41 Sniper Rifle (8mm)
Since all 3 cartridges and all 3 weapons are inspired by real life weapons, would these qualify as "mundane"?
Ammo added effect:
Another thing to bring - military grade ammo often have modified versions that serve special purposses. ie: Some versions of .50_BMG are actually explosive (admittedly, some of the most OP variants are exclusive to .50cal). These are real and (relatively) mundane...
Just a pair of curiosities...

Re: How mundane is mundane?
Hm.
A good point to bring up, and another thing that we need to start thinking about. It's been discussed in the past, sort of, that any items created by a group or company that's owned by a PC are not really considered mundane anymore, for the sheer fact that most users do not want their weapons so easily destroyed like a normal gun can be.
Given the right amount of heat, or a simple defect, mundane weaponry [ even on the tank level ] can be dismantled or rendered useless.
If these guns suffer the same obvious weaknesses, then they're obviously considered mundane. However, if the weapons are more durable than average guns, take for example Skyler's gun. It's relatively normal, other than it's not easily destroyed, bringing it above the mundane.
So, again I ask, do they suffer the same weaknesses as mundane weapons do?

Re: How mundane is mundane?
Since these fictitious weapons are designed to be based on real-life standards, they would be made of steel with aluminum/wood/plastic frame. Similarly, even though the bullets don't really exist, they are comparatively similar to .40 S&W, 5.56 NATO, and 7.62 NATO rounds respectively.
Sounds like your saying that my case study would be mundane...So long as reality remains the core of the weapon's mechanic
This still leaves the question of real life "super-ammo" such as 7.62mm Saboted or .50cal Hi-Explosive. True, you can't buy these at Wal-Mart (and you can't get the corresponding Mk 14 EBR or M2HB machine guns their either), but such ammo types a manufactured commercially in the US and widely used by US and allied militaries...
I suppose said super-ammo could have their own issues...but then, how do you weaken tungsten?

Re: How mundane is mundane?
Here abouts we pass into the realm of legality, which is far more complicated than either "possibility" or "probability". Just as there are ammunition types that are available to RL combat personnel, there are actually weapons that civilians cannot aquire.
Even here in Deregulation Nation, there are laws governing what sort of weapons a civilian can legally acquire...example: US civilians can buy an AR-15, a semi-auto rifle. They cannot buy an M16 assault rifle, which is the same weapon modified to be full-auto.
Or take Guerrero's KRISS Vector:
The Vector was originally a .45cal SMG about the size of a handgun with a stock, US law says this is illegal so...
Civilian market Vectors have an extra foot of barrel, lack Burst and Full-Auto fire and are marketed as "Short Barreled Rifles" or "Carbines"
And none of these laws matter in France since they write their own gun laws...
Still, playing my own devil's advocate, I have contemplated the issue of upgraded ammo, and I have started to realizes most of these modded ammo probably have their own RL weaknesses: Tunsten can overheat the weapon, Incendiary & and Hi-Ex can explode, etc.
Of course, then there are weapons that change all the rules, ie: GE's M134 Minigun, which basically cannot overheat since it staggers fire from 6 independent barrels, even with Armor Piercing rounds...But still has a myriad of its own weakness...

I believe you are over thinking things. RL ammo and weapons that someone could reasonably get their hands on are mundane.

What Red said.
Anything that can be obtained by a civilian is mundane, just to add to it a bit.

Re: How mundane is mundane?
To be fair, I have Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder; I overthink everything and enjoy doing so. The fact this discussion has given me a better understanding of the nature of firearms canon is besides the point...
But, again I need to point out the fluid nature of "reasonable": since automatic weapons are (generally) exclusively available to police and military (by law), the only way for most people to get such weapons is by illegal methods; these same illegal methods could just as easily (and reasonably) make OP ammunition available to unqualified civilians; ie:The only way to get an M16 is to rob a military depot; in the next building over you can snag some armor piercing rounds...
Again, I'm not arguing that OP ammo should not have a weakness...1^:1v makes plenty of sense...and I am also willing to just go with "all fixed-barrel guns are mundane" too (unless an M2 is OP too...overthinking is fun, dur)

Re: How mundane is mundane?
Wouldn't one of the 'weaknesses' of non-standard ammo be that they're hard to come by? It seems like it would be a built-in disadvantage.
Even if your 6.66mm HellCannon SoulShredder™ bullets have exactly the same stopping power as a standard .25 caliber pistol round, you still need to special order them from LaVey Ballistics. Delivery in 5 to 10 business days or pay extra for special two-day priority shipping.

Re: How mundane is mundane?
Scarcity can easily be remedied by Stockpiling. Whatever you did to get that fancy ammo, just rinse and repeat, give yourself time to accumulate ammo while no one's looking and boom: de-facto infinity...Still, one might be more inclined to conserve such ammo but that is more a character weakness...

Re: How mundane is mundane?
Well, sure, you could circumvent your own weaknesses, but what would be the point from a narrative perspective? You're writing your own story.
You could also say that your character is allergic to sunlight, but make him completely nocturnal. In a decent story, though, eventually that weakness should become relevant. Superman always manages to bump into another stash of kryptonite, even though he knows it's the only thing he's vulnerable to.
