Blaze

"Trust me: you don’t want to know the cost of party tricks like mine."

The Bio

Real Name: Vincent Blaze
Hero Name: Blaze (he’s not very creative)
Also Known As: Vince, Subject V-137
Alignment: Neutral Good
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Race: Caucasian Human (Artificial Meta)
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Green
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 162 lbs
Blood type: AB+

The Looks

Vincent is a gruff-looking man in his Thirties who looks the part of a drifter who wanders around from place to place. Dressed like a vagabond, he has sandy brown hair with a prominent stubble.

The Personality

Outwardly, Vincent appears to be an aloof man who tries to avoid involving himself in the world’s problems. And for the most part, he matches the outward appearance. Underneath the aloof exterior is a man who shoulders a great deal of rage over his past and uses that rage to drive him into protecting others. Law and chaos are irrelevant, as long as he can save lives.

Terse, gruff, occasionally rude, and a bit of a flirt, Vincent is a stereotypical jerk with a heart of gold. He’s a friendly man underneath his exterior, and his good qualities shine around those who know him, but his insistence to not develop relationships beyond the professional make him come across as uncaring toward others.

Underneath the flames of rage in his heart is the desire to keep others from suffering the same fate that he had. Even so, he has a survivalist streak, never staying in any one place for an extended period of time, instead seeing the world as a series of hiding spots and potential threats. He actively cultivates a loner image to avoid getting attached to people, and by extension, to avoid the pain of loss.

Despite this, he has a small hidden shelter outside of Chicago to let people like him - victims of circumstance - hide out from people who would exploit them.

The Story

Orphaned at an early age, Vincent grew up in what was - at first glance - a normal orphanage. As it turned out, it was anything but. Along with other orphans, Vincent was forced into an initiative to make artificial Meta-humans for use as super-soldiers. Forced into the program as young as eight years of age, the initiative had less than a ten percent success rate.

The compound he was injected with over and over with during the course of experimentation was codenamed “Crimson”, for the mad doctor who concocted it. Vincent’s earliest memories of this time were of the sterile white walls of the orphanage - a prison masquerading as a sanctuary. He was huddled in the corner of his room, knees drawn to his chest. The door had creaked open and he tensed.

“Subject V-137, it’s time for your treatment.”

Panic had clawed at his throat as the orderlies approached.

“No! Please! It hurts!”

His pleas were ignored as the orderlies strapped him to the gurney. The needles came next, burning like magma in his veins. He screamed until his voice gave out, praying for death. But death never came. Instead, something else had awakened within him - a power that smoldered beneath his skin, waiting to be unleashed.

The memories he held only get worse: 13-year-old Vincent strapped to a cold metal table, needles piercing his skin, needles injecting him with a glowing crimson fluid. Doctor Crimson, the mad egomaniacal scientist, looked over him, his eyes gleaming with fanatical excitement.

“You will be our magnum opus - the beginning of a new breed, boy,” the doctor crooned.

Screams echoed through sterile corridors as the serum took effect, the smell of burning flesh filling the air as Vincent’s newfound powers manifested for the first time, flames erupting from his skin. Maniacally and triumphantly, Doctor Crimson laughed.

Years passed in a blur of pain and fire. Then, on his 18th birthday, Vincent finally broke free. The orphanage, and the sinister laboratory it concealed, burned to the ground. And he’d left his tormentors to die in the inferno.

For fifteen years, he’d been on the run, trying to help those who’d been as unfortunate as he had been. Hiding, in case the ghosts of his past tried to reemerge and take him back.

The Powers

  • Enhanced Attributes: Vincent’s strength, reflexes, and speed are all above the human norm. When in hand-to-hand, he can move faster than a normal human eye can trace. His strength is enough to overturn a small car with a bit of leverage, but he can’t straight-up pick up and hold a vehicle over his head.
    • Weaknesses: Although faster, stronger, and more responsive than a baseline human, Vincent is no less prone to injury from firearms, bludgeoning, or stabbing than a normal human being would be.

  • Pyrokinesis: Vincent’s main power he acquired is the creation and manipulation of fire. While the flames he can generate are nowhere near hot enough to melt the likes of tungsten or titanium (melting points of 3410 °C  and 1670 °C, respectively), they are more than hot enough to melt silver and incinerate an unprotected human being on the spot. The range is also fair, with a direct fire of range of around 50 meters (about 164 feet, rounded down). To hide the fact that he can create fire, Vincent often chews on matchsticks and tosses them as makeshift incendiary grenades. Vincent himself is unfazed by being set on fire, though the same can’t be said of his clothing.
    • Weaknesses: Vincent’s pyrokinesis can be doused with water, and the powers also suffer in terms of effective range the further below freezing the local climate gets. Dropping into the negatives in terms of Fahrenheit can negate his power completely.

  • Thermal Insulation: Vincent can easily withstand the heat of the flames he projects and higher. It’s nearly impossible to incinerate him using conventional incendiary weapons.
    • Weakness: Vincent’s thermal insulation caps out at around 3500°C, slightly higher than the melting point of tungsten. He has no defenses against non-thermal plasma, and normal thermal plasma (which can have temperatures well in excess of 6093°C) can bypass this defense.
