Are Metahumans Human? (Poll)
Page 1 of 1 • Share
Are Metahumans still human, or a new species altogether?
Are Metahumans Human? (Poll)
PUBLIC DEBATE TIME:
This is, obviously, a public debate. No hard feelings, no one's opinion counts more than anyone else's, no locked topic.
Are Meta-Humans, the term being used here solely to refer to those with the genetic mutation dubbed by the scientific community as the "Metagene", a different species than regular humans? True, it is only a single gene. However, it grants the object a large difference between themselves and the average homo sapiens sapiens, potentially altering every aspect of their physiology.
So, are they still human? A new species altogether? Are some still human-those who have minimal effects- and some not? Do you have some other, enlightening view on the topic?

Re: Are Metahumans Human? (Poll)
I can see both sides to this coin, however i feel that meta humans are a different species.
You see, mutation is what causes anything to be what it is, mutation is basically what makes a species a species of its own. Just to give an example, there are over 35,000 different species of spiders. Most of these species aren't that unique, just a change in color or size yet they get to be called another species.
Yes, meta humans are in the same family as humans just as lions and house cats are in the same family.
If a bird gets to be called its own species because its color is different then any other birds then meta humans should get that right because they can shoot fire from their hands.

They can procreate and create nonsterile offspring therefore they are the same species.

It's not necessarily as cut and dried as that, many closely related species can produce valid hybrid offspring (as uncommon as that may be) in this situation meta humans are described as being changed only via their meta gene, this is an apparent single gene mutation which is a very small difference despite the magic powers given.
Meta humans couldn't even be argued to be a separate subspecies honestly.

Single gene mutation or not it makes more then enough difference to make them their own as stated in my first post. Mutation is what makes new species, the meta gene is just another mutation just like the ones that evolved ape like creatures into humans.
There are smaller mutations in creatures that have warrented them being called an entirely new species like a simple beak change on a bird or a fur color change on a bear.

Re: Are Metahumans Human? (Poll)
The "Mutations" are way too inconsistent with each other to be considered a species. You'd have to invent dozens of species to account for the various differences the mutations have caused.

If you look at the biological ranking system you will see meta humans and humans would be in the same genus, but not the same species.
They are genetically different in many ways so putting them in the same species is not correct.
As i have said it would likely be classified as multiple species in the same genus as homo sapians.

Considering they are different from humans via a single gene that's not enough to distinguish as a second species or subspecies, each power is defiantly not worthy of it's own classification, especially as you'd need a stable population of people with the same mutation causing the same power for them all to be classified differently at all

It is more then apparent these beings aren't entirely human, at the very least they would be a sub species of humans.

You're all wrong.
Metahumans are Corgi's in disguise.
If you disagree you are wrong. That is all.

Re: Are Metahumans Human? (Poll)
Metahumans are actually humans with the meta-gene. The meta-gene is a string of mutation that makes the human 'meta.'
Meta is of Greek origin with many meanings, but in this sense it is "Beyond" but also "Among" humans.
Metahumans being what is Beyond and Among. Okay, so, to further this, and it may support some other opinions that have already been shared, but here:
Metahumans are human, but Metahumans are also better than humans. They are beyond them. The capabilities of humans are nowhere near the capabilities of a Metahuman.
Then we can flip this all around and look at it differently. We use 'Metahuman' to classify humans that are different than the average homo sapien. We do this on THIS board mainly because it's a familiar term that's been used elsewhere; the DC universe uses the term loosely to describe 'superhumans.'
But, anywho. Humans and metas can breed and make the babies, so metahumans are still humans, just better humans than the regular humans.
Just like a human with Down's Syndrome is a lesser human to some, but still a human nonetheless.
That sounds harsh, but it's just science, baby.
