Alignment: Neutral
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Race: Human (Angel descended)

Costume Description/Image: Atticus tends to wear dark colored clothes of a nice variety , leaning more often towards fine black tailored suits, Dark silk dress shirts, Black jeans, boots leather shoes. Basically things that make him look at the very least business professional or like he’s headed out for a not on the town with 20 somethings looking for tail.

While officially on the job, he has a black and silver uniform and wears a custom leather side belt for his various magical supplies. He wears a tie and button up white shirt under his uniform, always the picture of precision. He also is hardly ever seen without his glasses on.

Personality: Atticus is not your average 17 year old and that’s if you ignore his magical capabilities and aetherial heritage. He is more disciplined and rigid or uptight by comparison a lot of the time. He likes to say mature and he’s probably correct.

With great power comes a great burden on the shoulders of the one who wields it, and this fact never escaped Atticus mind. When he began learning to harness magic, it was never a game or play thing to him even as a child. Magic could be dangerous and so he treated it with the respect and reverence it deserved and this discipline carried over into the rest of his life whether it was school, martial arts, or the fine arts.

Today as a keeper of the balance he maintains a loftier or perhaps aloof ideology, relieved in a way of the conscience that weighs down most people in pursuit of something more important. He does what needs to be done and has no qualms with his lot or job in life. He is a necessity and not everyone can wrap their head around that. He sins for the greater good or benefit of the universe and he upholds the one truth that all must remain in equilibrium lest the world tilt on its axis and spin into oblivion.

History: Atticus Faust was born to a completely mundane normal life. Two parents. Nine months worth of gestation. No complications during labor and he cried when the doctor smacked his behind. He was almost completely normal for those first 3 years or so his parents were content to believe. That was until he displayed the Gift. The talent. The potential to harness magic. It manifested simply as these things always do. Making objects float or move across a room. Elle and Roger Faust couldn't simply ignore the signs.

Something had to be done and so they set about teaching the boy to control and not use magic just like they trained him not to use bad words or hit other people. Unbeknownst to the other people in their small community in Bakersfield, Elle and Roger were both of the mystical persuasion themselves. She a wiccan with power to call forth spirits and he had a talent for finding things and calling them to him. Both weren't particularly noteworthy in their power alone without outside help, such as through objects and meditation so when Atticus' power did not wane by the time it was time for him to begin school, they called out for help. Roger sent for his aging mother, a sorceress in her own right able to lay bindings and store power and events.

Together, the two parents managed to talk Eleanor Faust out of home schooling young Atticus but couldn't argue against her wishes to place a binding on his emerging powers. They however didn't notice that her enchantment was modified. It was a siphon for his magical energy sending it into various items once they grew full of the copious energy.

Atticus went to school during the day and at night was taught about magic by his parents and his grandmother, a very stern rearer of children. It was in this way that he was instilled with discipline and respect for power. He at first wasn't even allowed to cast spells which he quickly got over as a good kind hearted boy. He would learn stories and symbols and signs and names of creatures and entities beyond the bounds of the realm, and things continued like that for a time.

Things were set in a cycle. Wake up, bathe, breakfast, school, chores, homework, lesiure time, dinner, magic lessons, bed, repeat. He never had to worry about things altering too much and so he grew comfortable in this routine. Excelling in all that was put before him. Then Summer came. He got about a month off the first summer to be a child and be with friends. Then the grind of learning magic began and persisted until school started up again and so it went for another year. The summer of his 7th year, Atticus was enrolled in martial arts classes by his father to train his body and he fired his first gun.

The experience both exhilarated and frightened him. He actually dropped the weapon immediately and ran all the way back to his father's car before his dad managed to coerce him into giving it another try. Things were good, his grandmother seemed even better and rejuvenated even by staying with his family. He knew nothing better and was thus happy. Atticus however was wrong.

The next year he found his calling in working with energy magics but then there was a mishap of sorts. While opening his mind's eye to the flow of energy around him, the boy called out to his own trapped energies stored in staves, jewels, the toaster, and several spools of thread around the house and in so doing caused his grandmother, who had been using the energy to revitalize her body, to have a heart attack and during the chaos he shattered the spell of binding on his powers and slipped into the flow of forces of the world and had it not been for his father's quick action of reversing his usual methods of wizardry to banish the little boy, Atticus would have destroyed his childhood home.

The improvised spell sent Atticus to a parallel world riddled with spirits of things that made up the world. They found the 8 year old to be an interesting oddity until his power slipped from his grasp and he obliterated every one of the creatures in a quarter mile. The experience of being the conduit for so much power in such a small immature body left the kid unconscious in an alien world. Thankfully his parents were able to pull him back by working together at the hospital while Eleanor was nursed back to health. Atticus was from that point barred from casting spells without all three adults present and even though they never said anything to him about it, he could see the fear and blame in their eyes when they looked at him and thought he wasn't looking back.

It tormented him so he redoubled his efforts to be more disciplined and it was then that other children began labeling him as strange as he drew away from them and anyone else that tried to get close to him.

Almost a year after that experience a new family moved into Bakersfield. This new family however was malevolent in their reasoning. Atticus' power had not gone unnoticed. Though but a pinprick in the world, in a realm with so few able to harness magic, he was like a beacon at that moment when he was shunted across the fabric of reality. This new family tried to get to Atticus, using their twin boy and girl to keep tabs on him. They even once atempted to kidnap him only to be thwarted by Roger showing up on their doorstep to collect his son.

A silent war for the boy had begun under his nose or rather over his head as the adults resorted to shadow warfare to combat each other. Well that was until the stakes were raised one day and the Fausts chose to attempt something beyond them. With their abilities together they called out to summon and bind an entity of decent power to plague the other family. The attempt however was ruined when they chose to induct Atticus into the circle. With a simple stab of a dagger, their efforts were unmade. The angelic blood that had culminated in his veins and not theirs dropped into the bowl and mixed with theirs as art of the offering. But it's potency enhanced the spell beyond their intent. It also lured the attention of something else beyond the world. Something that answered that call and tried to rip its way into the Material Realm to try and devour or inhabit the littlest Faust.

The battle was too much for Atticus however as he backed out of the room with fear in his heart. He ran. Not simply to his room but far beyond. He took what he could carry of the things he had and wanted and left home. He ran as far as his 10 year old legs could take him, his father's gun tucked in his backpack alongside a few books and other things. he didn't know where he was going but eventually ended up somewhere outside Chicago.

The next few years for Atticus were filled with living on the street trying not to bring attention to himself. Normally this wouldn't have been very difficult but as a 10 year old living on the streets seemingly alone. Few normal people took notice of him but some did liek the police or child services people off duty who didn't recognize him moving through their neighborhood. Atticus, however, would always run when someone attempted to approach him. He was constantly vigilant for over amonth until he ran his way into the china town area of the city and catching his breath in a secluded alleyway, he did one of the few bits of magic he afforded himself during that time as simple spell sort of. It was an illusion spell using light, making a cloak of an image in front of the user and allowing them to place it somewhere else. He used it then and put it in front of himself to blend in with a wall.

Fortunately his spell did it's job until he fell asleep over an hour later. When he awoke, he found himself swaddled in a warm bed, wrapped in a blanket and a pillow under his head. He had been found but not because he had been seen. His spell was what had revealed his presence that day. A sweet old couple, the Zhang's to be precise, had noticed his bit of magic craft as they made their way to their home for the night. The wife a shinto spirit priestess able to call upon spirits not iunlike the way Atticus' own mother had been able to and the husband was a sorceror of fire magics.

They took the wayward boy in and allowed him to live with them for practically free. His intentness on making it fair however propelled him into various chores and efforts to pul his weight around their home and small tea and magical supply shop. Under their tutelage hedeveloped a skill with potions and elixirs and liquids of all kinds, growing in his magical skills only slightly as he refrained from spell work as much as possible because in the end it had only caused hi some degree of trouble. He did however once cast a spell to scry on his old home to discover that his parents were still alive however his father had a slight scar running the length of his face and his mother seemed thoroughly upset a lot of the time. He couldn't bear to continue his spell and broke the surface of the bowl of water.

For days after he was dismayed. Atticus threw himself into his monotonous efforts in order drown away the images of his family. He had been one of those ungrateful children that ran away never to be seen again but he couldn't go back. His presence had caused nothing but grief for them. The idea of going back both lightened his heart and made him nauseous. He was a child conflicted.

Eventually however, his destiny came a kidnapping. It took the form of a tall human being with lengthy hair and androgynous features. The person simply pointed at the tween and told him he was coming with him. Atticus face blanched even paler than it usually was and he made a futile run for it.

All the experiences involving kidnapping had left a sour taste in his mouth over strangers and this seemed like one all over again so he bolted as fast as he could using a quick thought to obscure his location he formed a cloud of thick gas out of a concoction he had been diligently brewing and ran out the door only to be caught several blocks later after a few feebly cast out of practice spells and crafty escape tactics. But as these things go, he couldn't escape the shemale and was accosted into the afternoon. Of course after the explanation and proof of identity and title, Atticus succumbed to the tutelage of the mage who had come to claim him as his apprentice. Now 5 years later Atticus is the deadly and accomplished capable apprentice to the most prominent of mages and doubles as that individuals bodyguard from time to time.

However even under the teachings of this magus, Atticus still has much to learn both about magic and himself and the nature of his abilities.

Powers: Light Magic – Atticus is a sorcerer specializing in energy spells most specifically those involving light. Using his magic craft he can bend light to his will to accomplish several types of spells. His go-to spells fall under 5 concise spells. This also affords him magical senses, manifesting as the ability to understand and sense manipulations of all forms of energy or alterations in them, this however does not mean e can affect them.

Illusions -By affixing an image in his mind and uttering a few magic words of deceit, Atticus can form illusory images. By continuing to focus he can make these images move but due to only working with light, they do not have substance nor can they produce sound or emulate weight making them imperfect and easy enough to see through by those with a sharp wit and a close eye but even these people can be fooled for a few moments.

Light Spirits – By briefly opening a conduit between the Material world and the ethereal realms , this sorcerer can call forth various spirits invoked or formed of light such as those whose images are known as constellations and forged into the night sky, angels, and beasts of pure light and unadulterated goodness to do his whim. (NPC powergrids applied for separately and details hashed out in that thread)

Light Blasts - a combat situations best friend, Atticus bends and harnesses the power of light into potent blasts of light energy creating great amounts of heat and sometimes concussive force, vaporizing the target of these spells or pulverizing them into submission.

Concept or Aspect Magic - By invoking aspects or ideals of what light is believed to work like such as through its electromagnetic spectrum properties, it's ability to be absorbed, reflected, or refracted or split, or what people believe it be such as good or fast or formed of particles or composed of a wave, he can perform hosts of other spells based on this such as altering his vision, reflecting attacks, dispelling evil, or form a rainbow to step from one place to another (as justification for travelling from one city to another not for teleporting in a thread)

Hard Light Constructs – Using his most difficult spells, Atticus can create objects formed of hard light which manifest as solid constructs of light energy. They are incredible durable but not impenetrable. The strength and structure of these constructs is easily broadcast as well because the color of the construct reflects how tightly it is composed, shifting down the spectrum of visible light as they lose cohesion, beginning as white an slowly shifting from red to violet as the frequency of the light dissipates.

Using these spells however, Atticus can form many things based on his focus and imagination.

Atticus’ other magical talents and capabilities are best seen in his ability to imbue items with spells and power for future use or to create potions and cast into them spells and energy for later uses. This functions similarly to the gadgetry system an is powered by his intelligence score, hough as an added bonus only characters versed in magic are capable of using Atticus’ magical hardware. Atticus is also able to invent technological devices to blend with magic to a degree.

He also has a bit of control over the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum and can, with great effort, concentration, and a bit of prepartion, cast spells that use the wavelengths outside those of the infrared - ultraviolet light wavelengths, such as x-ray, gamma ray, microwaves, and radio waves but rarely ever does so as these spells can be dangerous or harmful to himself or others or cause great amounts of magnetic interference in the environment. One of his more used of these sorts of tricks is a simple Electromagnetic Pulse Wave to damage or turn of electronic devices.

Angelic Heritage
Atticus potential for magic is due to his bloodline, connecting him to one or more of the angels cast from heaven by god who still possessed their potent god given energies even then. Because of this demons and entities who fear the wrath or powers of the angels and god tend to shy away from or take particular interest in the boy even if he doesn’t know why. This also leaves him with a soothing aura to children and animals as long as his anger is in check, making him seem friendly even when he isn’t trying to be.

Skills and Abilities:

Sharpshooter and skilled marksman - would be a renowned marksmen if he were more publically known His eye is sharp enough and his relexes good enough to shoot other projectiles in mid flight

Skilled hand to hand combatant - trained in several melee weapon styles as well as bare handed combat.

Accomplished artist and musician - possessed of exceptional senses, he puts them to use with incredible artistic capabilities, drawing, scultping and painting to make money and composing songs and rhythms to pass the time. These skills have evolved his magical constructs and illusions to rarely seen levels of detail and composition. Oddly, he tends to not wear his glasses while crafting or playing music. Also an excellent photographer, frequently sells photos to newspapers and media sources of superhuman activities and the like.

Expert potion crafter - very knowledgeable when it comes to potion making and brewing of all sorts able to make concoctions of innumerable types even able to improvise recipes o his own.

Licensed pilot - mexico needs to start asking better questions.

Excellent chef - an able cook capable of making the most meager ingredients appetizing and nutritious

Excellent medical skills - Able to perform some sorts of surgeries and repair a great many injuries using magic to supplement years of training, though he does possess a large degree of medical knowledge but perhaps too broad for some situations. Can administer the best of first aid even under duress.

Roleplay Sample:

(note not for this character but it’s a sample all the same)

Fear. That was what gripped the heart of the teenager as he stood on top of the building looking out over the grounds of his own family's property.
It wasn't fear of heights or getting seen up there or even necessarily falling. It had been hard enough to crawl up onto his roof exactly. He was scared of failing at what he was about to do.
Adam of course was a mutant. That much would've been obvious to anyone who watched him get onto the roof of his house. He probably could have climbed normally but that wasn't the point of the day or the exercise. It was the weekend so the help wasn't about and his parents as usual were off somewhere taking his younger brother shopping, so Adam was thankfully alone.

He was taking the opportunity to test his powers out just a little more. He could manipulate his own shadow and use it to form actual tangible objects or he could use it to shape what he liked to call 'evolutionary advantages' onto his body and today he was going to try the most dangerous 'advantage' of all. Flight. So there he was wrapped in obsidian blackness on top of his roof looking at the backyard of his house. It was an expansive lot of land and his neighbors were far enough away that they couldn't see him. There was the pool and the garden and the guest house and then the yard itself. Everything well upkept and practically sparkly clean.

Adam wasn't sure why the hell he was doing this to himself. It had been tough enough to crawl onto the roof from his second story window and now he wanted to jump off of the roof.
It wasn't like someone was pressuring him into using his powers or being able to do something random with them like he was doing. He had never found himself in a situation where he legitimately needed to fly without an airplane around him.

Unsure he was ready, Adam unraveled the black body suit his shadow was forming around him and instantly felt a shiver run through his body as the cool wind blowing at nearly 40 feet off the ground hit his back. He willed his shadow to flow down the side of his house and to glide across the lawn through the shade and bring back more shadow to work with, like a dog sent to find and bring back the duck its master had just shot.

He watched the black amorphous shape flow away from him and disappear from view for a second as it made its way down the wall before gliding smootly across the grass and under the deck chairs around the pool, dragging the shadows they made with it like one would pull back a curtain. It continued, under his direction over behind the trees, pulling them along as well, getting 3 trees worth of shadow before he felt satisfied at the size of the black shade that danced around his backyard. Narrowing his pitch black eyes a bit and extending a hand, the giant shadow started
to pull itself from the earth and stream towards the roof of the house to connect with its master's outstretched arm.

The inky mass flowed across his pale flesh like water, spreading up to his shoulder and out across his chest, leaving a cold clammy feeling in its wake for a second as it crept across his body.
In the end the black pool of shadow from the lawn disappeared onto Adam, clothing him in a tight black skin, smooth of all wrinkles and devoid of any color to speak of. It was then that he closed his eyes and imagined a pair of black bat wings emerging from his back. And so it was, as two wings the color of the night sky slithered out of the back of the shroud and grew until they stretched out well past arm's reach. Turning to look, Adam discovered that he cast no shadow in the light of the sun above him and that he had wings fit for a dragon growing out of his back.

Gulping, he threw caution to the wind and and folded the wings back as close to him as possible and leapt from the roof as hard as he could.

The teenager started to plummet fast toward the waiting earth, but he wasn't intending to greet it, not just yet at least. He urged the wings to spread wide again and turned them slightly, causing his descent to abruptly stop as he was carried aloft and into the air like a bird.

He glided on the mild breeze for a few seconds before he willed the wings to flap in unison following the pattern and angle he had researched for the past few days in various books, trying to emulate the pattern a bird used to cary itself higher into the air.
He was almost surprised to discover that it was working as he heard the loud WHOOMPH of each wingbeat bombard his exposed ears. He climbed higher and higher, reaching 60 feet off the ground before he tried to glide again.

He was doing it! It had seriously worked. He could fly! And he felt his heart flutter with exhileration as he turned and spun in the air, wobbling on the wind for the first time.

"WOOHOOOOHOOOO!!!!", came his yell of ecstasy as he swooped closer to the ground. What he didn't realize was that his lack of focus was making his suit lose its grip on his body and just as he got over his pool, he flet the first hole in his left wing and lost every ounce of confidence he had. That was all it took too, because within seconds, his shroud of inky blackness had flown off of his body and he fell with a hard smack into his pool with a god awful splash and short lived yell.

He swam his way back to the surface and sucked in a deep breath as he paddled there. He could feel his clothes weighing him down, soaked all the way through and doing little to aid his efforts to stay afloat. Then the memory came back to him. He had flown! Legitimately borne himself aloft and remained in the air for at least a minute. How many people could say that? Certainly no one he knew. He could do something man had wanted to achieve for millennia in one try. One try he messed up right off the bat but still...

"Typical," was all he could say, trying to keep a cool facade for no reason at all as he pulled himself up out of the pool and laid flat on the side of the pool, the sun shining a tad too brightly into his squinty eyes, "Just frickin' typical."

The summoning power needs to draw from its own separate ep.

The breaking objects apart into 7 different sections doesn't really work in the astral magic section listed. Reflecting attacks could get a little tricky when used.

You may need to create another ep bar so it would be 6 ep for light magic and a separate 2 ep bar for the illusions.

Atticus Faust Empty Re: Atticus Faust

Post by Plural March 20th 2012, 10:22 am

i took care of the first two things.

reason for 1 ep summoning is that he only ever summons one or two of the things at once anyhow.

however i don't see why it should be necessary to put the illusions into a two ep power. If i can make solid light constructs making non solid constructs would be as simple... when someone takes shadow manipulation are they not able to manipulate intangible shadows as well as make solid shadow things on one ep bar? not to mention these illusions are purely visual and insubstantial. They produce no sound or scent and have almost no heat signature to speak of.
