Sexual Content 2: Sexual content is permitted. References and writing about genitalia and sex acts are permitted, but explicit detail is not. Fade to black, or use the dotdotdot rule. (Let's keep it PG-13.)
Violence 2: Graphic violence is permitted. Explicit description or in-game narration violence is allowed.
Despite these ratings, keep in mind that there is a limit, and you should not cross it just to garner attention. Also, resorting to curse words is also like adding senseless fluff to your posts.

RP vs. Writing
Page 1 of 1 • Share
Is RP collaborative writing in the end or are they really different?
RP vs. Writing
Ok, Mister Reaper and I seem to have a bit of a disagreement. He says that RP is not writing and writing is not RP. I say that RP is just collaborative writing... So what you guys think? Vote in the poll above and comment below with your own viewpoints and arguments.

Re: RP vs. Writing
RP is writing. RPing has vastly improved my fanfiction writing/original skills and vice versa. RP=Roleplay. When JK Rowling was writing Harry Potter, she was roleplaying Harry Potter. When I roleplay Nightkill, I write his motivations, emotions, etc.
Just a brief two cents.

Re: RP vs. Writing
collaborative writing is the same as plainly writing because in the case (exp. a book, a movie, a television show) it still winds up having the same ending and completely controlled courses of events. I believe that the differance between an RP and writing is just like the differance between a play and sports.

I completely agree with Nightkill there. Roleplaying has improved my writing skills so much... and everything else he said. XD

Re: RP vs. Writing
To roleplay is so far different from wrighting because if you think about it this sight could be some were in real life how people say act like knight/ role play. One thing is when you wright you are just telling what happens where and whats going on and you have to follow the story line or everything is messed up. With roleplaying you have more free room you get to do all that and more like say mix up personalities or go and have more fun in descriptions and you can venture off a little without messing up the story line. So i would say they are DIFFERENT.

Re: RP vs. Writing
In my opinion, writing in most cases is easier than RPing especially when RPing with people of varying skill. With Rping you are working as one part of the author while when writing period your the whole author.
Rping, i think, is more like scripting than writing. Then again, writing is such a wide catagory that rping would still probably be considered writing. Writing i guess would cover all forms of written literature like poems or even music so in essence rping is writing because writing is a wide catagory in which everything could fit under.
So yes, I agree that RPing is writing.

Re: RP vs. Writing
It's a pickle situation. RP is writing, but writing doesn't have to be RP.
Freeform RP is writing. I've never met a writer who would agree writing a story has a "completely controlled ending or course of events." Do you really think any book has ended exactly the way the author had in mind when he or she began? No, because you're writing for characters and characters are living things that change regardless of what you want. RP only amplifies this by forcing your characters and ideas to interact with those of other writers, not creates it.
The skillset is the same, which is why RP is a great way to improve writing skills. There are rules that only apply to RP, because any time you do things with other people new rules have to apply. Just like playing a game multiplayer instead of single player, there will be certain etiquette.
A pickle is always a cucumber, but a cucumber doesn't have to be a pickle. It's in no way like a sport vs. a play, because it's not two wildly different things. Rehearsing Hamlet doesn't involve any baseball skills or make you better at playing baseball. If anything, writing is sports in general, while freeform rp is a specific sport. Writing is the broad genre, freeform is a specific way to do it.

Larping. but I believe it is implied that we're talking about freeform roleplay, which is what we do on the site..

Right on the head. NightKill is right here. When you RP, you effectively step into that role, whether it be 'turn based' or just writing. You still take on a role by stepping into that characters shoes and seeing the world and environment around it with your own mind. They are essentially the same thing and come from the same pool of creation that is the imagination.

Re: RP vs. Writing
Agreed with NightKill. I have a whole trilogy based off of a RP character who started out on a small rp chat room.
