The Looks as Mercedes

With light, coffee-coloured skin, Mercy has darker freckles sprinkled across her face, mainly around her nose and upper cheeks. She has a firm jawline with a curved, small chin, with full lips. Her eyes are a light honey-like brown that seems gold if seen in the light, and her eyebrows are full and curved slightly downwards, giving her a more fierce look. Her eyelashes are black, and therefore seem long. Her hair is dark brown, just on the border of being regarded as black, and rather curly. She keeps it short - it never reaches her shoulders.
She is slightly below average height, but not too much to make her stand out. Her appearance is unique due to her parents' mix - her mother is Spanish, while her father was African-American.

The Looks as Chupacabra

As her alter ego, Chupacabra, she has a suit and mask to hide her identity. It's made out of tough yet stretchy and flexible dark-grey fabric. Her mask has two small, sharp ears on top to match the canine Chupacabra theme, and one eye is red, the other green. For her mouth she has an opening with two stretches of fabric between that slightly resemble teeth. The rest of her suit is the same colour as her mask, and therefore it seems like one piece. On her suit there are black lines that look like ribs on her torso, again to enhance the Chupacabra canine theme. Her arms and legs knee-down are bare, as it's where she makes her keratin spikes protrude.

On her hands she has finger-less gloves, and they are also palm-less, so that she is able to propel the spikes at her opponent. Most of her back is showing where the spikes retract around her spike. It's hard to distinguish her gender from this attire, and many think that the Chupacabra is a male. It helps with keeping her identity safe.

The Legacy

Personality: Wit is one of the many words used to describe her - she has the humour and the intelligence to make sarcastic remarks and fiery comments. She has very limited politeness, as she believes that everyone's equal, but this can land her into trouble. A grin or laugh from her is not hard to come by, and she's very rarely serious, but she's a switch, and if flicked to the other side, she can become snappy, irritable, and vicious. Mercy can have a lethal tongue if someone ticks her off severely, but most of the time she replies with a mocking tone.

Her pride can be an issue, and she is no stranger to jealousy. Her straightforward, direct attitude can brush people the other way. She's a rough-around-the-edges girl, and an extrovert. Despite this, she doesn't have many close friends, and those that she cares for she has a strong instinct to protect. She's a daredevil at heart.

History:
When Spanish Mia Sanchez first met African-American Roy Terry in the bar she was working at, they got into a relationship very quickly. Both were mostly poor, and when Mia got pregnant, Roy started dealing drugs in attempt to support his family. He got caught one night when his and Mia's daughter was only one year old. He was caught with 4 grams of hard drugs, and was sentenced 20 years in prison. The fine was $5,000 , but Roy Terry had left his family a lot of money during the three years he had been dealing. He'd be released once Mercedes turned 21. Mercedes, his daughter, grew up mostly without her paternal figure. She rarely visited the prison, as it was far away, and her mother had to work many jobs to keep the family stable.

Mercy was a very capable and smart child, her motive being to understand everything. She wasn't anything extraordinary in terms of knowledge, but she was among the best pupils. Nobody knew she had superhuman abilities until she was 6 years old. It first happened in grocery shop - Mercedes went to pick out cereal near the exit door when a strange man approached her. He grabbed her suddenly, and, being overwhelmed with fear, without her knowledge, she made two things happen at once. First of all, as she found out later, the man's worst memory was recalled in a mere millisecond:
It was from his childhood, when his father shoved him down the stairs, his arm exploding in pain as he landed on it, the bone crunching and his limb bent in an unnatural way. The pain was vivid in the memory.
The second thing that happened was terrible, hot pain sprouting along her lower arms, where the man was gripping her, and spikes appeared from her skin. Mercy was shrieking, partially from the fear, the memory, the pain and shock of her upper arms, the store was quickly alerted.
The man, clutching his bleeding hand, dazed from the memory, fled. Mercy's spikes disappeared, but her arms were bloody.

The second time was in school, aged 10. Mercy was being teased, and she ignored it for three-fourths of the year. But one day, she couldn't take it anymore, when they were walking along the street. One of her bullies grabbed her shoulders to stop her from walking, and a memory befell the two in the blink of an eye - the girl's memory was when she was climbing up a tree when a branch broke from under her and she fell, breaking a leg. All the pain, all the emotions were felt. And, again, spikes rose along her lower arms, but this time they also appeared on her upper arms and hands. The pain was sharp, stinging, and the girls fled from Mercy in horror.

The third time it was uncontrolled was, during the time of which her mother found a new boyfriend, and they had moved into his house - he was much richer than they were, and that wasn't saying much until you noted he had a sauna - and 14-year-old Mercy was struggling to accept the fact that she hadn't seen her father for four years , and probably wouldn't see him in another 9 when he was released. She got into an argument with her mother which became very heated, and when her mother slapped her for her rude words, her most vile memory crept up on them both. It was of her mother, receiving the news of her sister's death, then being at the funeral.
The spikes came, spreading to her collar-bone, the pain still harsh yet significantly less than the first time.

Mercy began experimenting, and found that she was able to make herself 'spike up' on command if she put her mind to it. It still hurt, but less and less the more she did it. By 17, she could make the spikes appear on her finger-tips and use them as talons, as well as her face and other parts of her body. A year later, she found she could 'shoot' the spikes if she wanted to, and by the age of 20, she was able to do so. It took her so long to master the spikes due to the pain. The memory, she found out, she could resurrect only within contact with the person, and 'rewind' them over and over. The downfall: she'd be living through the rewind as well, and she could never forget the memory.

Just after she turned 19 - she had skipped a grade up because of her intelligence - she graduated college and became a Graphic Designer, a work-at-home job. However, she had to move away from home to do so. Her boyfriend came with her, but her mother couldn't leave her home - physically and emotionally. Mercy got an apartment on the third floor, and walked most of the time because the elevator hardly worked. She forgot about her powers completely. A year later, after going out one night with his friends, her boyfriend was hit by a car, driven by a man under the influence of alcohol. The man turned out to have 2 children and a wife. The murderer even wept in court. He got 10 years in prison, but it wasn't enough for Mercy.

This man had killed one of, if not the, most important people in her life, and got half the sentence her father had received for dealing drugs to support a family. Mercedes, in her anger and grief, made an alter-ego: Chupacabra.
The Chupacabra, which she called herself after, is an old folklore myth. It is rumored to be real, however, and kills and feeds off livestock, sucking out the blood. It is said to either look like an extraterrestrial, but more commonly thought of as a large dog with no fur and spikes.

So, what keeps her from being a superhero?
Mercedes Sanchez is ruthless when serving justice, and will work as a hit-man for anyone who has the money to pay her.

The Powers and Weaknesses

Powers

Power 1:
Dark Memories.: When she comes in contact with an individual, she can recall (one of) their darkest memory. Sometimes, she does this without intending to when she's very scared or frustrated. Both Mercedes and the individual relive that memory in a split second, which she then 'keeps' (don't confuse this with stealing the memory, which is explained in the next paragraph). Once she has 'possession' of it, she can 'send' the memory to a person as long as she can see them. She can therefore plague her enemy with mental pain, but will have to go through the experience with them.

With consent, she can even 'extract' a memory from the person as long as they're willing. She can't do this against their will because she doesn't have the mental capacity to get past their 'mental barricade' and extract the memory as well. Mercy is unable to extract her own memory.

She can only do this with negative memories. (permission required)

Power 2: Spike Protrusion: At will, Mercy can have spikes protrude from her skin, mainly her arms, hands and back. They are made of keratin, and therefore hard and lethal. She is used to doing it on her arms, legs, fingers, shoulders and spine, so it doesn't hurt as much there as it does on other parts of her body. On her chest and stomach, for example, the pain is enough to make her double over, while when the spikes appear on her knuckles it only stings. Although she has control over it, if she's in a perilous situation or she's terrified, the spikes may protrude. She mainly has the spikes retract on her fingers, and uses them as claws.

She can make them grow bigger, and is able to shoot them from her body, but mainly does so from her palms. Her spikes are tough, and therefore can serve as a slight armour against sharp weapons, such as knives.
After a long period of time - c. 12 hours - however, her skin gets sore and cracks, and starts to bleed from around the spikes.

Weakness(es)

Weakness 1: She is unable to forget the memories she has 'taken'

Weakness 2: Can only retrieve dark memories when in contact with the person. Can only transfer it once she has 'collected' the memory.

Weakness 3: Pain when retracting spikes - it hurts more nearer her vital organs

Weakness 4: Can be too straightforward and proud to be comfortable around for certain people.
