Confession of Pain
By Eightball & Agent Afterdark

The doctor is to be feared more than the disease
-Latin Proverb

The man gasped for air, his throat constricted by the hands of the reaper himself. Emotions flashed across his eyes, it was easy to tell he was frightened and strangely confused at the same time. “W-hat d-o you w-ant?” The glove suddenly crushed inward, and the noises escaping his throat halted. Mechanical noises emitted from the white beak of the reaper, and the man was just conscious to hear his own voice spoken back to him. “Your voice.

The man collapsed, and the one left standing was Plague, dressed in a long black overcoat coupled with a hat, his ashen beak protruding from underneath like the face of death itself. An ashwood cane was in his right glove while his left glove was kept unoccupied. Plague slowly shifted to another figure, which had seen the entire ordeal in shock.

“ Y-you killed him!”

Plague turned and looked at the younger boy, utilizing his new voice. “Remember this, boy, not everything is what they seem.” And then Plague was one with the darkness, traversing the streets and alleys with a subtle patient pace of a man who seemed to have all the time in the world. And yet his form never really passed into clear view of the street cameras that he knew where there, watching always, and neither did the light truly illuminate his quiet details, with the exception of his ivory beak that distinguished him from all the rest. The tap of his cane was the loudest sound he made, behind the faintest whooshing sound of his attire.

His prey was marked, and no amount of bodyguards would stop Plague. Vengeance must be fulfilled. The tap of the cane was like a gentle alarm of death to those employed to Jacob Frost's front-door security that night. Their ears would perk up immediately after hearing it, but the reaction time of seasoned war veterans were not enough. All that would be left would be a pool of blood and two discarded corpses of what once was. Life, a fragile thing to thrive for so long.

Lights were the first to go, then one by one they fell like flies. Men grunted and yelled and died and blacked out, and none could match the soft tap of the cane, like the ticks of a clock until a dreaded reckoning.

"Jacob Frost."

Confession of Pain Empty Re: Confession of Pain

Plague. The name itself did not exactly scream of a maniac, but the freak’s record certainly did. He had been a target of who knew how many analyses and investigations, but very little had come to light except an ever-increasing pile of bodies. It would be only a matter of time before he slipped up, go after somebody too prolific, or tangle with one of the metahuman population that was simply out of his league. That lot were not always the forgiving sort they were made out to be in the endorsement materials. The figure crouching in the darkness had been looking forward to collaring this one. He had heard theories about the mystery man’s involvement in various cases from his unearthly mentor, Sundown, and she in turn from her masters at that strange investigative agency she answered to – the Light. The attacks were random, which meant there was no real trail to follow, but if one maintained vigilance, eventually the tiniest crumb would bring him to a confrontation. Luck would be helpful, too, but he disliked admitting to any belief in luck. Huddled silently just outside the open window with his thick, black cape pulled around him and the brim of his wide hat pulled over his masked features, Agent Afterdark sat, watched, listened. Indistinguishable from a balcony gargoyle, merging with the umbra.

Sundown would not be far, in case he needed back-up, but as the door to Minister Frost’s otherwise empty office slunk open, and Afterdark continued to watch, he felt himself tense, his muscles like a bundle of wires. The glimmer of an ivory beak. The polished flick of a cane. He was familiar with Plague’s chosen motif. The contradiction sickened him a bit, but it also intrigued him. He would have liked to have concocted his own theory on this brand of insanity. Time for that when the nutcase was behind bars. Now was the time to make himself known. A cloud of dark blue smoke poured over the floor, encapsulating him up to his calves before rising, and Plague’s ears were assaulted by a horrible, mocking laugh, echoing inhumanly loud all around it, its source as adept at living without illumination as himself. The people of the underworld had names for this phenomenon. A goddamn vampire, the Master of Men’s Minds, that walking nightmare. Evil men did not fear the night. They feared what lived within it. Plague was about to have his first meeting with exactly what they meant.

Confession of Pain Empty Re: Confession of Pain

"What do you want?"

"Memento moori," the perfect pronunciation of the term slithered out of the doctor's bill, "Your mistakes have come back to haunt you, Frost. But your prescription requires a last confession of-"

Plague froze. He tilted his head, and another strange mechanical sound chinked and whirred for a moment. "Looks like you're here to live another day, Frost." Blue smoke erupted from an unknown source that Plague glanced around for. Then an ear-splitting laugh filled the night. Robert Frost, who had been frightened, was now terrified. Knowing his situation had just gotten worst, he made his way far away from Plague and the smoke as possible, wheezing as he did so. In stark contrast, the doctor made no sudden movements, but shrunk deeper into the cloud, using it to his advantage and waiting for his unannounced opponent to address himself.

"It's rude to intrude into business." His voice sounded like a whisper, yet it was amplified so it could be easily heard, but not traced. Lower frequencies were harder to be located by the biological ear. "Whatever show-biz you want to bring to the table, do so quickly, I have a client to revisit." This was no local enforcement, this was a vigilante confrontation. Plague knew one when he saw one. These theatrics were a one-man show, too. A click emerged from Plague's cane, but to his adversary there would be no apparent effect. An object slid out of his cloak into his hand, ready to be used. Using smoke to obscure the confrontation is a tool to be used on one who is both confused and utterly unaware of his other five senses, not one such as Plague. This would be this vigilante's mistake in his failed onslaught.

Confession of Pain Empty Re: Confession of Pain

The aggressor did not make himself apparent right away. He would stall to give Frost as much time to run away as possible first, and likely trailing urine in his wake. Disgusting, but signs he was still alive. Afterdark would not be shocked that the man had his dirty little secrets to hide, which would come to light in due time, and perhaps someone would be better off with him defeated or out of the picture, but the fact was that what Plague had in mind was nothing short of pure murder. He already had the blood of the bodyguards and other men on his hands. Afterdark could make a healthy enough guess from the sounds from outside just moments before, and he regretted their deaths, but if he had lost Frost, he might have lost his point of entry. Plague’s maintained confidence was nice. Refreshing, even. It would stop his muscles from succumbing to atrophy from lack of use. One thing Afterdark still had from his youth was the enjoyment he derived from a good scrap.

“Now, now, old boy,” he taunted, “I think we’re both partial to a bit of showmanship. After all, it takes a certain kind of outright, self-gratifying pretentiousness to speak to Frost the way you just did. I mean, really, using Latin to open your ultimatum? Read a lot of Gothic horror in school, did you? Probably weren’t the most popular in your class. That is, if you even went to school. Yes, that might explain a few things, I suppose.”

He advanced on Plague. The pair of them were competing to get the drop on one another, turning their respectively finely tuned senses and tools of silence, in his case his softened boots, into weapons. They would enter and leave sight of each other over and over, neither wanting to give themselves away for longer than was needed.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’ve no doubt the minister has a lot to answer for. Politicians just can’t seem to help themselves on that front. Goes with the territory. In a more ideal time I’d be right beside you bringing them to justice…but I know your reputation, and the evidence, if you think I’ll allow you to get away with killing a man in cold blood, you’re dead wrong.”

Confession of Pain Empty Re: Confession of Pain

Post by Eightball March 12th 2013, 1:25 am

A high-pitched yet short frequency resounded throughout the alleyway.

"Besmirch my means of communication as you will, this judgement you are making is a terrible flaw that will result in your dowfall." Plague would finish this opponent quickly, as he would not allow Frost another chance to escape and continue his works. The shrill pitch came again, and Plague backed away from the advancing man and a small click sounded on the floor in front of him. In another agile leap, Plague flourished his cane as the pitch became higher and in shorter intervals until it stopped altogether.

"Reputation? You know nothing. You are a little boy playing with fire, and intervention will get you burned."

If the man would avoid Plague's trap, he would become in range of his cane and not in hand-to-hand range of him. The smoke was still there, but it was beginning to clear up.

"Leave now-"

A sedative dart flew from within Plague's person to the figure.

"-or you will not escape later unscathed.
